After the success of 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, there appears to be no stopping Sony from launching the SSU. More importantly, if Morbius’ latest trailer is to go by, the SSU is going to have connections with the MCU and Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy.

Connections abound in horrifying Morbius trailer

The three-minute trailer for the upcoming SSU film, Morbius, gave fans a glimpse of what to expect from one of the comic book superhero movies with significant horror roots. The trailer was also full of references to the MCU and other Spider-Man-related villains, including Michael Morbius mentioning Venom right near the end of the video, and a Daily Bugle newspaper mentioning Black Cat and Rhino, among others. Of course, it won’t matter as much which cinematic universe Morbius is going to belong to if it doesn’t succeed. For now, we have reservations, but the trailer does a great job of establishing that Morbius is quite unlike any other comic book movie before it. Interestingly enough, the movie never uses the word “vampire” to refer to the eventual monicker of the movie’s protagonist, Dr. Michael Morbious. However, it doesn’t take a vampire expert to tell that Morbius has powers that are commonly associated with the aforementioned creatures of the night. After appearing weak during the first part of the trailer, the doctor is later shown to have gained the ability to fly and move at faster speeds than the human eye can see. It also appears that he’s got the ability to sense and hear things like a bat. It’s not clear yet, but Morbius also has another power where he can either become a cloud of bats or control bats and send them to his enemy’s way. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility, or in Morbius’ case, consequences. The main downside to Morbius’ newfound abilities is that he’s got an unquenchable thirst for human blood. There are so many questions that audiences have about Morbius and where Jared Leto’s portrayal of the classic Spider-Man villain fits in society. Thankfully, fans don’t have to wait too long to get an answer. After several days, Sony is finally set to release Morbius exclusively in theaters on January 28, 2022.
