A few months ago, there were leaks that Nintendo and Microsoft had teamed up, starting with Halo’s Master Chief joining the cast of Nintendo’s popular fighting game crossover series. However, at the Nintendo Direct showcase at E3 2021, Nintendo took audiences by surprise by announcing Kazuya Mishima of the Tekken series as the next newest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Welcomes Kazuya to the Roster

Kazuya is one of the most popular characters in the Tekken series. He first appeared in the original Tekken game as the protagonist, before transforming into one of the series’ main antagonists in subsequent games.  Since then, Kazuya has appeared in most of the mainline Tekken games. The sole exception was Tekken 3. This was when his son, Jin Kazama, took his spot and became the protagonist of the franchise. Judging from the trailer, it looks like Nintendo isn’t going to change a lot of Kazuya’s movesets from the Tekken games. Of course, it’ll be tweaked to fit better with the Smash style.

Also, just in case you’re wondering, yes, Kazuya can transform into his devil form in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Be sure to check out the trailer below to see Kazuya in all his glory. Kazuya is the fifth DLC character to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of the game’s second Fighters Pass.  The most recent addition was Xenoblade Chronicle 2’s Pyra and Mythra back in February. Before this, Final Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth, Minecraft’s Steve and Alex, and Min Min from Arms had already joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s expansive roster as playable characters. For players who are interested in getting any or all these characters, they can purchase the Fighters Pass for $29.99. The final character is expected to be revealed later this year. It will also be the last fighter to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate barring any unexpected changes. Alternatively, players may also purchase each of the six Fighters Pass characters individually for just $5.99. Speaking of the Fighters Pass, the original Fighters Pass for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still available for $24.99. It comes with five additional characters, including Persona 5’s Joker, Dragon Quest’s Hero, and Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie. Also included in the first Fighters Pass are The King of Fighters’ Terry Bogard and Byleth, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
